Maui Beans Roasted on the Big Island

We're happy to announce the launch of Hawaii Coffee Box with Maui Coffees from Puna Big Island Coffee Roaster's! Owners of the first coffee farm outside of Kona and ka'u to win Grand Champion in the Hawaii Coffee Association’s Statewide Cupping Competition. Owners Kelleigh and Brandon roast coffee from Puna, Ka'u, Kona and Maui.

January's box includes their specialty Maui roasts : Maui Mokka and Maui Mellow. I also just had to include their Hawaiian coffee lipbalm. And an added bonus product: Organic sugarcane coffee stirrers from Hula Girl Foods! Here's the in depth break down of each product.

Maui Mokka

Picture
Tasting notes: chocolate, brown sugar, and the aroma of baking cookies. Soft, round, and full-bodied.
Origin: Ka'anapali, Maui Coffee
Farm: Maui Grown
Varietal: Maui Mokka®
Roast: Full City (Medium Dark)
Perfect for: single-origin espresso, drip, those with preference for low-acid coffees

"With these small, elegant beans, you’ll be getting cozy with the 1,000 year-old heirloom strain that gave Maui coffee its notoriety. It's sometimes assumed that a larger bean size will augment cup quality - the bigger the bean, the better the quality. We haven't found this to be the true. In fact, Mokka is the contrarian of the coffee world: these tiny beans captured the coveted first place in the 2014 Hawaii Cupping Competition, becoming the best coffee beans among Hawaii's commercial division entrants.
Not all is rosy about this variety though. Because the beans are so small, it’s very difficult and time-consuming to harvest by hand. It also has the habit of alternate bearing, meaning it may ripen at very different times year to year. Yields are also typically light. So, why grow it? Simple: it’s both elegant and delicious. A soft, round, full-bodied cup with varying layers of chocolate (cocoa, milk and dark) and brown sugar."

Processing: washed & natural, dried-in-fruit

Roast: medium
Perfect for: drip, espresso, drip, with dairy or black

Organic Sugarcane Coffee Stirrers from Hula Girl Foods

Hula Girl Foods has been manufacturing 100% pure and natural sugar cane products for over twenty-five years. Organically-grown fresh cut sugar cane stalks will enhance every sip with the natural sweetening of sugar cane. Swizzle Sticks are great for iced teas and lattes too. Raw Sugarcane is actually a source of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and manganese. So, when your coffee is gone, go ahead a chew on your sugarcane stick! But that's it, just chew it without swallowing the fibers.
